The film Paradise Recollected, a blend of ironic mockumentary and filmic essay, delves into the motives behind the making of home movies as well as the elements that characterize their visual content. The film is a poetic study of the spirit of home movies as a kind of portrayal of the leisure culture that arose in parallel with the advent and increasing popularity of inexpensive Super 8 cameras in the 1960s. The intertitles refer to The Land of Cockagne, known in the Low Countries from an anonymous Middle Dutch rhyme text describing a dream paradise where no one has to work and worldly needs are met in abundance.
